Duane's take

Here's my telling of what the official marker has to say about New Hope Missionary Baptist Church in Robertson County. Now settle in, because this one goes back a ways. Way back, in fact, to a stand of woods west of the Spring Creek Settlement, where a congregation of faithful people planted something that would outlast just about everything else around it.

New Hope Missionary Baptist Church took root there in the eighteen hundreds. No grand address, no permanent walls yet, just the woods and the will to gather. That's where it started.

Then came the eighteen nineties, and a woman named Lucy Bell Stubbs Mitchell stepped forward. She was a member of that church, and she did something that changed its story entirely. She donated land right there on her own property so the congregation could have a permanent home.

A building went up. The church finally had a place to call its own. But the story didn't stop there.

In nineteen eleven, the congregation made a move to a new site, and here's the part that stays with me. They didn't just leave the old building behind. They took it with them.

They rebuilt the sanctuary using the materials from that original structure. Old walls made new again. Old timber raised up one more time.

Now, this church was never just a place for Sunday services. It was the social center, the political center, the educational center for the African American community. Fraternal organizations met there.

Events and celebrations filled those walls. It was the kind of place a whole community leaned on. And it faced hardships, the marker doesn't look away from that.

But through all of it, New Hope kept doing exactly what its name promised. For the community of Wheelock, generation after generation, it has been a place of hope, of faith, and of strength. Started in the woods.

Still standing. Some things are just built to last.

What the marker says

Originally located in the woods west of the Spring Creek Settlement, New Hope Missionary Baptist Church was established in the 1800s. In the 1890s, church member Lucy Bell Stubbs Mitchell donated land on her property for a permanent church home and a building was erected. In 1911, the church moved to this site and rebuilt the sanctuary from the old church materials. More than a religious home, the church also served as the social, political and educational center of the African American community, hosting fraternal organizations, events and celebrations. Despite hardships, the church has provided a place of hope, faith and strength for the community of Wheelock for generations. (2016)
