Duane's take
Here's how the official marker tells it, and I'll do my best to do it justice. Way out in Travis County, there's a church with a story that goes back to a cold February. February 23, 1876, to be exact.
That's the day the Rev. J.O. Cavallin stood with a gathering of Swedish immigrants and organized what would become the New Sweden Evangelical Lutheran Congregation.
Now picture that, if you will. Folks who had crossed an ocean, who carried their language and their faith like provisions in a pack, planting something permanent in Texas soil. Two miles west of where the church stands today, they built their first sanctuary, in 1879.
That spot is still marked by the New Sweden Lutheran Cemetery, which has a quiet way of reminding you that a community's roots go deeper than any building. Then comes 1922. A new structure rises, built on land donated by a woman named Johanna Petterson.
That act of generosity became the foundation, literally, of what the marker calls an important Travis County landmark. And here's a detail worth sittin' with for a moment. All those years, from that first February gathering onward, the services were conducted in the Swedish language.
The hymns, the prayers, the sermons, all in Swedish. Then 1923 arrives, and the language shifts. A congregation reaching forward while holding onto where it came from.
That's the whole story right there, really. A church that started with immigrants and a reverend on a February morning, that built, and moved, and changed, and kept going. The marker says it continues to serve the community with an ongoing ministry, celebrating its rich heritage.
Out here in Travis County, that's not a small thing. That's the whole point.
What the marker says
Organized on February 23, 1876, by the Rev. J.O. Cavallin and Swedish immigrants, the New Sweden Lutheran Congregation built its first sanctuary in 1879 two miles west of this site (where the New Sweden Lutheran Cemetery is located). The present church structure, which has become an important Travis County landmark, was built in 1922 on land donated by Johanna Petterson. Services were conducted in the Swedish language until 1923. The church continues to celebrate its rich heritage as it serves the community with an ongoing ministry. (1988)
