Here's how the official marker tells it: and it's quite a story to tell. Nicholas Henry Darnell. Born April 20, 1807.

Died June 7, 1885. And in between those two dates, the man managed to leave his fingerprints on just about every turning point Texas ever had. Now that takes some doing.

The Republic, the State, the War, the Reconstruction; Darnell was there for all of it, and more often than not, he was up front. He showed up in Texas in 1838, and I want you to appreciate how fast things moved after that. He arrived, and before long, he was elected to the Congress of the Republic of Texas.

Not just elected, mind you; he served as Speaker of the House. Speaker. He'd barely unpacked.

Then 1845 rolls around and Texas is fixing to become a state, and sure enough, Darnell is sitting at the table as a delegate to the Statehood Convention. You get the feeling this man had a nose for history being made and a habit of walking straight into the room where it was happening. Once Texas joined the Union, he went right on representing Dallas and Tarrant counties in the State Legislature; and yes, he served as speaker again.

Some men chair a meeting. Darnell chaired an era. Then came 1863.

The Civil War was grinding on, and Nicholas Henry Darnell resigned his legislative seat to lead the 18th Texas Cavalry. Set down the gavel, picked up the command. After the war, you might think a man of his age and mileage would ease off.

You would be wrong. He was elected to the Texas Legislature again. And in 1875, there he sat as a delegate to the Constitutional Convention; the one that shaped the Texas constitution that still largely governs this state today.

From the Republic to the Constitution, nearly four decades of Texas history, and Darnell was in the thick of it every single time. Some men witness history. Nicholas Henry Darnell had a way of showing up right where it was being written.

Nicholas Henry Darnell (April 20, 1807 - June 7, 1885) Soon after arriving in Texas in 1838, Nicholas Darnell was elected to the Republic of Texas Congress, where he served as Speaker of the House. A delegate to the 1845 Statehood Convention, he later represented Dallas and Tarrant counties in the State Legislature, again serving as speaker. He resigned in 1863 to lead the 18th Texas Cavalry. After the Civil War, Darnell was again elected to the Texas Legislature and was a delegate to the 1875 Constitutional Convention. 1986
