Duane's take
Here's how the official marker tells it, and I'll do my best to honor every word. Now, out here in McCulloch County, some stories don't need much embellishment. The land does the talkin' for you.
This is the story of the Old Spiller Cemetery. It was established in 1866. That's the whole of what the record gives us, and friend, sometimes that's enough.
Think about what 1866 meant in Texas. The war had just ended, the ground was still raw in more ways than one, and somebody, somewhere in McCulloch County, set aside a piece of earth and said: this is where we'll keep our people. They called it Spiller, and Spiller it has been ever since.
Generation after generation, that ground has held its quiet. In the year 2000, the state of Texas recognized it as a Historic Texas Cemetery, which is just an official way of saying what the land already knew. Some places earn their standing not by being loud about it, but by simply enduring.
The Old Spiller Cemetery has been doing exactly that since 1866, and out here on the Texas road, that kind of staying power is worth pulling over for.
