Duane's take

Here's how the official marker tells it, and here's how I'm gonna tell it to you. Way back in 1891, a banker by the name of Otto Ebeling rolled into Marble Falls and decided this was the place. He had a wife, Emille, born a Giesecke, and four children, and a man with a family like that needs a proper house.

So he built one. A Victorian residence, and not some plain-faced box either. This was Eastlake styling, which means the place had opinions.

Bay windows. Decorative stained glass borders catching the light just so. You can imagine Emille looking out through those colored panes on a bright Texas morning, the world outside tinted amber and blue and red.

Otto was a banker, and he built like one, with confidence and a certain flair for the permanent. Now, the Ebelings had moved in shortly after arriving, and they stayed for over two decades. Then, in 1913, Otto sold the property and moved the operation to Austin.

Just like that, a chapter closed. But here's the thing about a house built with that kind of intention. It doesn't just sit there waiting to be forgotten.

Over the years, that same structure became a nursing home. Then a photographic studio, of all things, those bay windows probably doing real fine work for the light. Then a residence again.

Otto Ebeling was born in 1863 and died in 1935, and the house he built outlasted every version of what anyone thought it might become. The stained glass borders are still there. Still have opinions.

What the marker says

Banker Otto Ebeling (1863-1935) built this Victorian residence for his wife, Emille (Giesecke), and their four children shortly after moving to Marble Falls in 1891. Ebeling sold the property in 1913 when he moved to Austin. Over the years the structure has served as a nursing home, a photographic studio, and a residence. The Otto Ebeling house reflects Eastlake styling and features distinctive bay windows with decorative stained glass borders. Recorded Texas Historic Landmark - 1983
