Duane's take

Here's how the official marker tells it, and I'll do my best to do it justice. Somewhere in San Antonio, on ground that was among the first developed in its area, there stands a house that'll stop you mid-stride if you let it. The year was 1901, and a man named Otto Koehler was doing well enough to build something worth remembering.

Koehler had come over from Germany, born in 1855, and by the time he commissioned this home he was sitting at the top of the Pearl Brewing Company as its president. A man in that position, you understand, was not going to settle for modest. He brought in a local architect named Carl Von Seutter to design the place, handed the building work to a contractor by the name of Jaco Wagner, and for the grounds, he called on G.A.

Schattenberg to handle the landscape design. Four people, each with a role, each leaving their mark on the same piece of San Antonio earth. Now, what they produced together is what historians would come to call one of the most spectacular examples of turn-of-the-century Eclecticism in the city.

The outbuildings are still there. The grounds are still intact. The whole composition, exactly as Otto Koehler imagined it, has held together.

He died in 1914, and the house outlasted him, which is maybe the finest thing a house can do. Some buildings are just structures. This one is a statement, still standing, still making it.

What the marker says

Built in 1901 for German immigrant Otto Koehler (1855-1914), this home was among the first in this area. Koehler, president of the Pearl Brewing Company, employed local architect Carl Von Seutter to design the home. One of the most spectacular examples of turn-of-the century Eclecticism in San Antonio, with outbuildings and grounds intact, the Koehler home was bult by Jaco Wagner with landscape design by G.A. Schattenberg.
