Refugio County, Texas

Duane's take

Here's my telling of what the official marker says, standing right here in Refugio County. Now, some stories start with a building. This one starts with a mission, and it starts a long way from where you're sitting.

Back in 1791, a Spanish mission called Nuestra Señora del Refugio, Our Lady of Refuge, was established about thirty miles to the northeast. Thirty miles. Out there in the brush and the heat and whatever else that country had to offer in 1791.

But missions, like people, sometimes find they need to move. And in 1795, this one did. It relocated to the very ground we're talking about now.

That's where the story takes root. The 1868 building eventually got razed, as buildings sometimes do when a congregation has bigger ideas than the walls around them. And those ideas came to life in 1901, when an impressive Victorian and Romanesque sanctuary was completed right here.

Think about that combination for a moment. Victorian. Romanesque.

In the Texas coastal plain. That's not a building that apologizes for itself. Then, in 1946, the congregation kept building, adding a school, a convent, and auditorium facilities to what was already standing.

What makes this church something special, according to the marker, is what it represents: a unique blend of Spanish and Irish heritage in this area, a combination that doesn't show up just anywhere. And after more than two centuries of history, from that mission thirty miles to the northeast all the way to this sanctuary, Our Lady of Refuge is still here, still serving the local community. Some stories don't need an ending.

They just keep going.

What the marker says

This Church traces its history to Nuestra Senora del Refugio (our Lady of Refuge), a Spanish mission established in 1791 (30 mi. NE). The mission relocated here in 1795. The 1868 building was razed, and in 1901 an impressive Victorian/Romanesque sanctuary was completed here. School, convent, and auditorium facilities were added in 1946. This church, which represents the area's unique blend of Spanish and Irish heritage, continues to serve the local community. (1995)
