Gregg County, Texas

Duane's take

Here's how the marker tells it, and here's how I'm gonna tell it to you. Way out in Gregg County, there's a church with roots that go down deep, deeper than most folks might guess. It all starts not with Peatown, but with another congregation entirely.

A Disciples of Christ church, called the Christian Union Church, organized near Camden back in 1852. That congregation held together through some of the hardest years this part of Texas ever saw. But by the early 1870s, it had disbanded.

Gone. And you might think that's where the story ends. It isn't.

That's where it gets interesting. When those members scattered, they didn't just drift away and disappear into the pines. They formed new congregations in other places.

And one of those new congregations became the Peatown Christian Church, organized in 1871 with twelve charter members. Twelve. Just twelve people deciding that something worth having was worth starting over.

The church drew its families from the antebellum settlement of Edwardsville, commonly known as Peatown, and from the neighboring rural communities spread out across that countryside. Now here's a detail that stays with you. Those twelve charter members and the families who joined them, they didn't build themselves a brand new building right away.

They worshiped in the old Christian Union Church building, the very one that had belonged to the congregation that came before them. They used that building for over fifty years. And when it came time for baptisms, they walked to the nearby spring.

Not a river, not a baptistery built into a floor. A spring. There's something unhurried and certain about that, a community of people gathered around a spring, season after season, decade after decade.

The old building holding them, the water already there and waiting. Some stories don't need a dramatic finish. They just need to keep going.

And this one did.
