Harris County, Texas

Duane's take

Here's my telling of what the official marker has to say about the Pillot family, out here in Harris County. Now settle in, because this one stretches across generations and a whole lot of Texas timber. It starts, as so many good Texas stories do, with somebody getting on a boat.

A Frenchman by the name of Claude Nicholas Pillot, born in 1793, came to this area with his family in 1837. Not just passing through, mind you. Staying.

Putting down roots in a place that was still figuring out what it was going to be. Claude and his son Eugene, born in 1820, went to work in the timber business, and they didn't stop there. They made themselves useful to their neighbors, serving as officials in something called Spring Creek County.

Now, the marker calls it short-lived, and that's a detail worth letting sit for a second. Short-lived. A whole county, come and gone.

But the Pillots, they were still there. Around them and a handful of other French settlers, a community took shape. They called it the Willow settlement.

The family owned much of the land in the area and stayed active in that community as it grew up around them. Eugene, born in 1820 and living until 1896, turned out to be the one who really left a mark on the wider world beyond the Willow Creek country. He became a prominent builder in Houston, a successful lumberman who moved between two worlds, keeping homes both in the Willow Creek area and in the city.

In 1860, he built himself a home. That house outlasted him, outlasted whole chapters of Houston history, and in 1965 it was moved to this very site to stand as a reminder of what the Pillot family built, in timber, in community, and in stone. Some families, when they arrive, they just arrive.

The Pillots arrived and built a whole world around them.

What the marker says

Frenchman Claude Nicholas Pillot (1793-1862) came to this area with his family in 1837. He and his son Eugene (1820-1896) worked in the timber business and were active in the community, serving as officials in the short-lived Spring Creek County. The Willow settlement formed around the Pillot family and other French settlers. The Pillots owned much of the land in the area and remained active in the community. A successful lumberman, Eugene also became a prominent builder in Houston, maintaining homes both in the Willow Creek area and in the city. His 1860 home was moved to this site in 1965 to serve as a reminder of the prosperous Pillot family and its contributions. (2004)
