Duane's take

Here's how the official marker tells it, and I'll do my best to do it justice. Somewhere between 1898 and 1910, the Robinowitz family packed up what they had and crossed an ocean, leaving Russia behind for the United States. Now that's not a small thing, not by any measure.

A new country, a new language, a new everything. And Texas, of all places, is where they planted their roots. You've got to respect that kind of nerve.

The brothers didn't walk into town with a storefront handed to them, either. They started out as peddlers, working the roads for several years, learning the land, learning the people, earning every penny the hard way. That's the kind of foundation that holds.

When Cecil, Abe, and Libby Robinowitz finally opened stores, they opened them in Richmond, Beasley, and Rosenberg. Three towns, three footholds. As merchants and builders, those three made their mark on downtown Rosenberg at a significant time in the city's growth and development.

The marker is careful to say that, significant time, and it means it. In the early nineteen twenties, the Robinowitz buildings on Avenue G were doing real work for that community. The Rosenberg Post Office was in there.

So was Libby's Dress Shop. So was the R B Grocery Store. One family, one stretch of avenue, and the whole heart of daily life running right through it.

People picked up their mail, their groceries, and their Sunday dress all in buildings the Robinowitz brothers put up. That's not just commerce. That's a family writing themselves into the story of a Texas town, and the town keeping their name on the wall to prove it.

What the marker says

The Robinowitz family immigrated to the United States from Russia between 1898 and 1910. Beginning a new life in Texas, the brothers worked as peddlers for several years before opening stores in Richmond, Beasley, and Rosenberg. As merchants and builders, Cecil, Abe, and Libby Robinowitz contributed to downtown Rosenberg at a significant time in the city's growth and development. Early 1920s Robinowitz buildings on Avenue G housed the Rosenberg Post Office, Libby's Dress Shop, and the R B Grocery Store.
