Duane's take

Here's my telling of what the official marker has to say about this one, and I'll warn you right now, it's a story that rewards a slow breath. Salem Cemetery, out here in Freestone County. Established circa 1853.

Now, think about that for just a second. Circa 1853. That word, circa, is doin' a lot of quiet work.

It means somebody started burying their people here, started marking off a piece of ground as the place where memory would be kept, and the exact moment it began was already slipping away even then. No grand ceremony recorded, no deed stamped with a clean date. Just the land, and the people, and an understanding that this ground mattered.

That understanding has held for a long, long time. Salem Cemetery. Designated a Historic Texas Cemetery in 2001.

The designation is new. The silence here is not.
