Duane's take
Here's my telling of what the official marker has to say about this place, straight from the record. Now, out here in El Paso County, the land has a long memory. And one of the quietest keepers of that memory is the San Elizario Cemetery.
Established in 1898, this ground has been holding its stories ever since. Not every landmark announces itself with a grand tale of battles or famous names. Sometimes the significance is in the simple, enduring fact of a place that has stood, year after year, as a community's final resting ground.
In 2012, San Elizario Cemetery was recognized as a Historic Texas Cemetery. A designation that says, plainly and officially: this place matters. It has mattered to the people of San Elizario, and it deserves to be remembered.
Some markers make you lean in for the drama. This one asks you to stop, look out over the ground, and just reckon with how long a community has been burying its own here, tending to its own, and keeping faith with the ones who came before. Since 1898.
That's the whole story. And sometimes, that's enough.
