Duane's take
The official marker's got just a few words to work with here, so let me give you what it gives me. San Ysidro Cemetery, out here in Atascosa County. Established 1863.
Now, 1863. Think on that for just a moment. The Civil War is burning across the country, and somewhere in this corner of Texas, somebody is setting aside ground.
Consecrating it. Saying: this place is for remembering. That takes a particular kind of resolve, in a particular kind of year.
We don't know all the names. We don't know all the stories buried there. But the ground itself has been keeping them since 1863, and it's still keeping them now.
Designated a Historic Texas Cemetery in 2022. Some places don't need a long story told about them. Sometimes the years do all the talking.
