Fayette County, Texas

Duane's take

Here's how the marker tells it, and I'll do my best to do it justice. Now, Fayette County has always had a way of drawing people in, and this corner of it, this place called Schulenburg, sits right at the gateway to those rolling hills. German and Czech settlers knew a good threshold when they saw one, and they walked right through it.

The year was 1873, and the reason they came when they did was iron and steam. The Galveston, Houston and San Antonio Railway reached this spot, and that was all the invitation those settlers needed. They came from Lyons, and they came from High Hill, former residents of both, and they put down roots right here where the rails had stopped.

Now, a town needs a name, and this one got its name from the man who owned the land, Louis Schulenburg. That's whose ground it was, and that's the name that stuck. By 1875, it wasn't just a settlement anymore.

It was incorporated, an official town, standing at that gateway to the hills and saying to anyone passing through, come on in, we're here to stay.

What the marker says

German and Czech settlers used this gateway to the rolling hills of Fayette County. Settled by former residents of Lyons and High Hill in 1873, when the Galveston, Houston & San Antonio Railway reached here. Named for landowner Louis Schulenburg, town was incorporated in 1875. (1970)
