Hidalgo County, Texas

Duane's take

Here's how the official marker tells it, and I'll do my best to give it the telling it deserves. The town of McAllen, down in Hidalgo County, didn't just appear out of thin air. It started developing after the railroad arrived in 1905, and once an irrigation system made vegetable farming possible, things moved fast.

A hotel went up. A grocery store. A Presbyterian church, a bank, a weekly newspaper.

The bones of a real town, rising up out of the South Texas brush. Now, that might have been enough of a story on its own. But the Rio Grande Valley had a habit of turning one story into two.

In 1916, bandits caused border trouble, and the response was something to behold. Twelve thousand soldiers were sent to McAllen to restore law and order. Twelve thousand.

You stop and let that number sit for a second. That is not a patrol. That is a presence.

And wherever you put twelve thousand people, business follows. It boomed. New facilities started going up to meet the moment, and among them, opened in 1918, was the Casa de Palmas Hotel.

Now this wasn't just a place to sleep. This was the business center, the social center, the civic center for the whole Rio Grande Valley. The kind of place where deals got made and communities got shaped.

The railroad started it, the soldiers swelled it, and the Casa de Palmas gave it somewhere worthy to gather. That's McAllen for you. Always ready for what came next.

What the marker says

The town of McAllen began developing after the arrival of the railroad in 1905. Introduction of an irrigation system made vegetable farming possible. Soon there was a hotel, a grocery store, a Presbyterian church, a bank, and a weekly newspaper. In 1916 after bandits caused border trouble 12,000 soldiers were sent here to restore law and order. Business boomed with the increased population. Among the new facilities was the Casa de Palmas Hotel, opened in 1918. This fine hotel served as a business, social, and civic center for the Rio Grande Valley. (1979)
