Scurry County, Texas

Duane's take

Here's how the official marker tells it, and here's how I'm gonna pass it along to you. Way out in Scurry County, in a place called Fluvanna, there's a story about a congregation that kept moving, kept adapting, kept showing up, for the better part of a century. And it starts, as so many good Texas stories do, a long way from where it ends.

The year was 1893. The Reverend W.W. Werner founded what he called the Deep Creek Congregation.

No grand building, no steeple catching the light. The worshipers met at Jumbo Ranch Schoolhouse, a mile and a half to the east. Now, picture that.

A schoolhouse on the open range, pressed into double duty on Sundays, holding a community together. That arrangement carried on until 1902. Then the congregation moved again, this time to the school building at a place called Light, just one mile to the east.

And then the ground shifted again, not literally, but the way it does in Texas when a railroad comes through. In 1909, the residents of Light relocated along the railroad, settling into a new town called Fluvanna. The membership followed, and the congregation took on a new name to match the new place: the First Presbyterian Church of Fluvanna.

But here's the part that gets me. They didn't leave the old schoolhouse behind. That Light Schoolhouse, the very building that had sheltered the congregation through those years in Light, was picked up and moved to this very site in 1910.

Moved. The whole building. Because that's what you do when something matters to you.

Services continued right there, in that relocated schoolhouse. And the congregation kept on. Kept on through the years, decade after decade.

Right up until 1975, when the congregation finally disbanded. A vital religious and social institution for early settlers, that's what the marker calls it. And when you think about all those moves, all that stubborn persistence, all those Sundays stretching from 1893 to 1975, well, that sounds about right.

What the marker says

A vital religious and social institution for early settlers, this church was founded in 1893 by The Rev. W.W. Werner as Deep Creek Congregation. Worshipers met at Jumbo Ranch Schoolhouse. (1.5 mi. E) until 1902, then occupied the school building at Light (1 mi. E). Residents of Light relocated along the railroad in Fluvanna in 1909, and the membership became the First Presbyterian Church of Fluvanna. Services continued in the Light Schoolhouse, which was moved to this site in 1910. The congregation disbanded in 1975. (1977)
