Duane's take
Here's how the official marker tells it, and I'm gonna give it to you straight. There's a piece of ground in Kirbyville, Jasper County, that's had more congregations cycle through it than most places have had paint jobs. And it all started in 1898, when a man named John Henry Kirby gave two town lots to the Baptist church for the erection of a sanctuary.
Two lots. Just like that. And with that gift, the site became the center of spiritual and cultural activity for the whole Kirbyville area.
Now, the Baptists, to their credit, were neighborly about it. They shared the building with the Methodist congregation. For years, that one structure held two flocks.
But things don't stay tidy forever. Come 1905, the Methodists built their own structure and moved on out. Then 1916 rolls around, and the Baptists themselves moved to other locations, leaving the site open.
A group of Free Methodists stepped in and occupied the place. So you've got Baptists, then Baptists sharing with Methodists, then just Methodists, then Free Methodists. That's a lot of spiritual traffic for two town lots.
But the story takes a turn in 1925, when the property was sold to private enterprise and put to secular purposes. Sacred ground, gone quiet on the religion front. That lasted until 1962, when the Church of Christ purchased it and brought things back around.
One site. Multiple congregations across the decades. John Henry Kirby gave two lots to the Lord, and it turns out, a whole lot of folks had use for them.
