Travis County, Texas

Duane's take

The official marker tells this one, and I'm just the voice carryin' it down the road. Out here in Travis County, there's a piece of ground with a story quiet enough you might drive right past it. But stop a moment, because this land has seen something worth knowing.

A man named Peter Carr Wells, a Travis County landowner born in 1856, made a decision in 1894. He donated a plot of land on his ranch to the Willow Ranch School District. Just gave it.

And four years after that donation, a school rose up on this very site. Now, think about who filled those seats. Most of the children who came through that door were the sons and daughters of Swedish immigrant farmers.

Some of their families sharecropped the P. C. Wells land itself.

So the children of the people working the ground were walking up to a schoolhouse that sat on that same ground, learning to read, to figure, to draw, to run. They studied Texas history, geography, art, and physical education. They competed in interscholastic league competitions.

A small school, yes, but not a small ambition. Then came 1906. Another room was added.

Suddenly the schoolhouse wasn't just a schoolhouse anymore. It became a gathering place, space for community clubs, for social events, for the kind of evenings where a farming community gets to breathe a little and just be neighbors. Wells himself passed in 1913.

The school he made possible kept going without him, year after year, season after season, Swedish surnames on the roll, Texas wind at the windows. And then, 1938. The school closed.

The students were transferred to the Kimbro School District, and the building quieted down for good. A landowner's gift in 1894. A school that lasted until 1938.

Children of immigrant farmers learning Texas history on Texas soil. Some stories don't shout. They just endure.

What the marker says

Travis County landowner Peter Carr Wells (1856-1913) donated a plot of land on his ranch to the Willow Ranch School District in 1894. Four years later, a school was established on this site. Most of those who attended were the children of Swedish immigrant farmers; some sharecropped the P. C. Wells land. Students learned basic skills as well as Texas history, geography, art, and physical education, and participated in interscholastic league competitions. Another room was added in 1906, providing space for community clubs and other social gatherings as well as for classes. The school closed in 1938 and the students were transferred to the Kimbro School District. (1998) Incise on back: Marker donated by Estate of John E. Rolf and Travis County Historical Commission
