Burleson County, Texas

Duane's take

Here's how the marker tells it, and I'll give it to you straight with a little color on the side. Way out in Burleson County, in the 1880s, a wave of Czech immigrants came and put down roots. They didn't just pass through.

They settled. And when you settle, the first thing you do is give a place a name, so they called it Sebesta's Corner. Simple, honest, does the job.

That was the name for a while. Then 1895 rolls around, and things change. A man named John Snook helped secure a post office for the community, and the town took his name.

Just like that, Sebesta's Corner became Snook. Now, once a place has a post office, it's got ambitions. And this community had plenty.

Before long there was a one-room school, so the children had somewhere to go. There was a cooperative store, so neighbors could pool their resources and look after one another. There was a lodge for the Czechoslovak Benevolent Society, a gathering place where the community could organize, take care of its own, celebrate who they were.

And then there was the masova schuza. That's the slaughterhouse, and the marker makes sure to tell you the Czech word right alongside the English, because language is part of what these people carried with them and intended to keep. Every one of those institutions, the school, the store, the lodge, the masova schuza, tells you the same thing: these folks weren't just surviving out here.

They were building something meant to last. And Snook, named for a man who helped bring in the mail, is still on the map to prove it.

What the marker says

Settled 1880s by Czech immigrants. First called "Sebesta's Corner". In 1895 named "Snook" for John Snook, who helped secure post office. Soon had a one-room school, a "masova schuza" (slaughterhouse), a cooperative store, and lodge for "Czechoslovak Benevolent Society".
