Morris County, Texas

Duane's take

Here's how the official marker tells it, and I'll do my best to do it justice. Way out in Morris County, there's a place people started calling Snow Hill, and settlers were already putting down roots there by the early 1840s. Now, that's no small thing.

These were folks carving a community out of raw Texas land, and they did what communities do when they mean to stay. They organized a church. In 1852, local residents came together and established the Snow Hill Baptist Church, under the direction of the Reverend Samuel Morris.

When a congregation like that takes shape, it's not just a Sunday morning arrangement. It becomes the heartbeat of everything around it. And sure enough, that first sanctuary they built didn't just hold worship services.

It doubled as the community schoolhouse, tending to the souls and the minds of Snow Hill at the same time. That building was moved to its present site around 1871, and the land it sits on, including the cemetery right next door, had been donated to the congregation the year before by J. W. and Thurza Cason.

That kind of gift, land for the living and land for the departed both, says something about how seriously these people took what they were building together. And here's the part worth sitting with for a moment. The Snow Hill Baptist Church was already woven into the fabric of this rural community before the Civil War, and it has never stopped.

Through everything that followed, it kept playing a vital role in the life of the land around it. Some things in Texas just hold.

What the marker says

Settlers began moving to this area, which they called Snow Hill, by the early 1840s. In 1852, local residents organized this congregation under the direction of the Rev. Samuel Morris. The first sanctuary, which also served as a community schoolhouse, was moved to this site about 1871. The land, including the adjacent cemetery, had been donated to the congregation the previous year by J. W. and Thurza Cason. Since before the Civil War, the Snow Hill Baptist Church has played a vital role in the development of the surrounding rural area.
