Milam County, Texas

Duane's take

Here's my telling of what the official marker has to say about St. John Lutheran Church in Milam County. Now, some stories start with a bang, and some start quiet, with a handful of folks finding each other in the cold of January 1902, meeting together before there was even a name above the door.

That's how St. John Lutheran Church began. No formal organization yet, just members gathering, building something in the way communities do, slowly and with purpose.

Then came December 26, 1903, and under the leadership of the Reverend Carl Roth, the congregation made it official. St. John Lutheran Church was formally organized, and it took its place as part of a three-church parish.

Now that's a responsibility, being one piece of something bigger, and this congregation carried it. Out in the agricultural community of Detmold, two and a half miles north of where you're standing now, a place that had drawn many a German immigrant to put down roots in Texas soil, the members built themselves a sanctuary in 1915. They had a place of their own.

But they weren't done. Nineteen thirty-three, they enlarged the building. Nineteen forty-nine, they built a parsonage.

Decade by decade, they kept adding to what they had. The congregation stayed rooted in Detmold all the way until 1963. That year, they constructed a new sanctuary and education building right here at this site.

Now, Detmold itself declined over time, population and activity both fading the way small communities sometimes do. But here's the thing that'll stay with you. St.

John Lutheran cemetery is still out there, two and a half miles north, holding its ground. A link, the marker calls it, to the early settlers and the congregation. And that congregation, the one that started meeting quietly in January of 1902, is still serving its members and its community today.

Some roots go deep enough that even when the town around them fades, they hold.

What the marker says

Although members began meeting in January 1902, St. John Lutheran Church formally organized December 26, 1903, under the leadership of the Rev. Carl Roth. The congregation was part of a three-church parish. In 1915, members built a sanctuary in the agricultural community of Detmold (2.5 mi. N), the home of many German immigrants. In 1933, they enlarged the building and, in 1949, built a parsonage. The congregation remained in Detmold until 1963. That year, it constructed a sanctuary and education building at this site. Detmold declined in population and activity, but St. John Lutheran cemetery remains there as a link to the early settlers and the congregation, which still serves its members and community. (2003)
