Williamson County, Texas

Duane's take

Here's how the official marker tells it, and I'm just along for the ride. Out here in Williamson County, along the Brushy Creek area, there's a piece of ground that's been holding stories a good while longer than most folks realize. It's called St.

John's Cemetery, and the land itself remembers things the living have mostly forgotten. In the early 1870s, Swedish immigrants started settling into this part of Texas. They came, they put down roots, and by the early 1880s, a man named Pastor C.C.

Charmquist, together with the residents who'd gathered around him, established a church right here on this very ground, and alongside that church, a cemetery. Now, the earliest known burial in that cemetery is of an infant, dating to 1881. Think on that a moment.

Before the congregation had barely found its footing, this ground was already keeping its first quiet watch. That's how it goes with places like this. They begin with hope and they begin with grief, sometimes in the same breath.

The church that stood here holds the distinction of being the first Swedish Methodist church in the Brushy Creek area. That's no small thing. But by 1906, the congregation moved on, as congregations sometimes do, and would ultimately come to be named St.

John's United Methodist Church. The building left, but the cemetery stayed. The graves don't move.

For decades, that burial ground carried on, closely related to the church even after the parting. Then in 1984, the St. John's Cemetery Association stepped up and began to maintain the grounds, making sure the place didn't fade into the cedar and the grass without a witness.

And who is it that rests here? Early pioneers who broke this land open. Community leaders who shaped what came after.

And veterans, men who answered the call of military conflicts dating all the way back to World War I. Generations of a community, layered into the soil of Williamson County. Some burial grounds are just places.

This one is a whole chapter of Texas, written in stone and silence, and it ain't finished yet.

What the marker says

This burial ground is located on the site where the first Swedish Methodist church in the Brushy Creek area was located. In the early 1870s, Swedish immigrants began to settle in this area and by the early 1880s, Pastor C.C. Charmquist and residents established a church and cemetery here. The earliest known burial is of an infant, dating to 1881. In 1906, the congregation moved and was ultimately named St. John's United Methodist Church. In 1984, the St. John's Cemetery Association began to maintain the burial ground, though the graveyard continued to be closely related to the church. Early pioneers, community leaders and veterans of military conflicts dating to World War I are among those interred here. Historic Texas Cemetery - 2006
