Duane's take

Here's how the official marker tells it, and here's how I tell it back to you. Before there was a church, before there was a cemetery, before there was so much as a proper roof over a Sunday service, the Catholic faithful of Caldwell were gathering wherever they could find room. Early area priests made their rounds in the early 1890s, and the community met in various locations, including the home of the Windhausen family.

Picture that, a congregation crowding into somebody's parlor, holding onto their faith the way you hold a candle in the wind. Patient, steady, not about to let go. Then came 1895, and the community built something permanent.

A church dedicated to St. Mary's Our Lady of Lourdes. That name is worth saying slow.

St. Mary's Our Lady of Lourdes. Something had taken root in Caldwell, and it wasn't going anywhere.

Four years after that church went up, the community bought the land adjacent to it. This land. And they gave it a purpose.

The Caldwell Catholic Cemetery, a place set apart for what comes after. The first burial came quickly. September of 1899, a man named Jacob Svejda, also recorded as Schweda, became the first soul laid to rest in this ground.

He wouldn't be the last, not by a long measure. In the years that followed, this cemetery received military veterans, local leaders, the very founders of that church that started in a family's home. And the families themselves, generation after generation, many of them carrying the heritage of Czech settlers, many carrying Hispanic heritage, all of them part of that Catholic community that had been quietly, stubbornly building something worth keeping.

That's what a cemetery is, really. Not an ending. A record.

And St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Burleson County has been keeping that record since September of 1899.

What the marker says

Early area priests served Caldwell's Catholic residents in the early 1890s, meeting in various locations, including the home of the Windhausen family. The community built a church dedicated to St. Mary's Our Lady of Lourdes in 1895, and four years later bought this adjacent land for use as the Caldwell Catholic Cemetery. The first burial, that of Jacob Svejda (Schweda), dates to September 1899. The burial ground is the final resting place of military veterans, local leaders, church founders and families from the area's Catholic community, with a strong link to the numerous settlers of Czech and Hispanic heritage.
