Williamson County, Texas

Duane's take

Here's how the marker tells it, and I'm passing it right along to you. Out here in Williamson County, there's a church with roots that go all the way back to 1894, and the story of how it grew is the kind of thing worth slowing down for. The congregation was organized that year by German and Swiss immigrants, and they gave it a name that meant exactly what it was: St.

Petri Deutsche Evangelische Gemeinde. St. Peters German Evangelical Church, if you want the English of it.

Now, these were people who had crossed an ocean and planted themselves in Texas soil, and when they gathered to worship, they did it in the language they brought with them. German, every Sunday, the way it had always been done back home. That was the foundation.

But foundations, as any builder will tell you, are just the beginning. Come 1905 and into 1906, the congregation raised up a vernacular Gothic Revival sanctuary. A real sanctuary, stone and purpose built into every line of it.

That building had something to say, and it said it quietly, the way good architecture does. Then 1925 came along and a meeting hall was added, giving the community a place to gather for something other than worship, a room for the life that happens between Sundays. And in 1953, somebody had the good sense to connect those two structures, the sanctuary and the hall, so the whole thing became one.

One building, one congregation, one story. Now here is where the story turns a little bittersweet, the way a lot of immigrant stories eventually do. Back in 1929, English language services were introduced alongside the German.

It was a small door opening. But by 1955, that door had become the whole house. English had fully replaced the German worship that had defined this community for more than sixty years.

The old language, the one those founders carried across the ocean, had quietly stepped aside. That's not a tragedy, exactly. It's just time doing what time does.

But standing in front of St. Peters United Church of Christ today, knowing that in 1894 a group of German and Swiss immigrants decided this was where they'd put down roots, and that the building they raised in 1905 is still standing, still connected to that 1925 hall, still holding a congregation together. Well.

Some things outlast the language they started in.

What the marker says

This congregation was organized in 1894 by German and Swiss immigrants. Originally known as St. Petri Deutsche Evangelische Gemeinde (St. Peters German Evangelical Church), the congregation built this vernacular Gothic Revival sanctuary in 1905-1906. The meeting hall was added in 1925, and the two structures were connected in 1953. By 1955 English Language services, introduced in 1929, had replaced the worship originally conducted in German.
