Nolan County, Texas

Duane's take

Here's how the official marker tells it, and I'm just the one riding shotgun on the story. Way out in Nolan County, in the city of Sweetwater, there stands a building that's been doing a lot more than just standing. The Sweetwater Municipal Auditorium, constructed in 1926 and 1927, was designed by the Page Brothers architectural firm out of Austin, and from the moment those walls went up, this place had ambitions.

Big ones. The style is Spanish Colonial Revival, and if you've ever laid eyes on it, you know what that means: arches curving just so, ornate balconies that seem to dare you to stand on them, and elaborate detailing that tells you somebody cared, deeply, about getting every inch of this thing right. The Page Brothers weren't drawing up a plain hall for plain purposes.

Now, Sweetwater isn't the kind of town that undersells itself, and this auditorium made sure of that. International celebrities performed on that stage. International.

Out here on the rolling plains of West Texas, where the wind has opinions and the sun doesn't negotiate, people dressed up and walked into that hall and saw the world come to them. And it wasn't only performances. Social gatherings, religious events, political assemblies, civic life in all its forms, this auditorium held it all.

The marker says it played a vital role in the city's growth as a center of those activities, and you get the feeling that's not boasting, that's just the record speaking plainly. So next time you roll through Sweetwater and you spot those arches, those balconies, all that ornate detail catching the afternoon light, just remember: that building was built in 1926 and 1927 to mean something. And it still does.
