San Saba County, Texas

Duane's take

The way the marker tells it, here's the story of the T. A. and Emma Sloan House in San Saba County. Thomas Alan Sloan was born in Mississippi in 1838, and by 1856 he had settled himself in San Saba County.

Think about what that means for a moment. This was a county, a whole region of Central Texas, still finding its footing after the devastations of war and Indian raids. The open range stretched as far as a man could see, and fences were still more of a rumor than a reality.

Into all of that walked young Thomas Sloan, and he made something of himself. He became an important figure in the cattle industry. That's the kind of line that sounds simple until you picture what the cattle industry looked like out here in those years.

Then it gets a whole lot bigger. He married Emma Henderson, born in 1845, and together they built something that would outlast the chaos around them. In 1883, Thomas and Emma built this two-story frame house.

Now, the world outside that door was in the middle of a hard transition, ranching country shifting from open range to fenced pastures, the whole landscape changing shape. And right in the middle of all that, this couple put up a house that their descendants would describe as an oasis of quiet elegance and beauty. That phrase is worth sitting with.

Not a fortress. Not just a shelter. An oasis.

Emma lived until 1935, long enough to see generations of family move through the rooms she and Thomas built together. Thomas passed in 1905. The house stood through all of it, and it stands still, a two-story frame reminder that even in the roughest country, some people plant something meant to last.

What the marker says

This two-story frame house serves as an iconic reminder of a time when San Saba County and Central Texas were recovering from the devastations of war and Indian raids and transitioning from open range to fenced pastures. Thomas Alan Sloan (1838-1905) was born in Mississippi and settled in San Saba County in 1856. Sloan became an important figure in the cattle industry. He and his wife Emma (Henderson) (1845-1935) built this house in 1883. It conveys how our pioneer ancestors created an oasis of quiet elegance and beauty for generations of descendants while preserving their ranching heritage.
