Duane's take
Here's how the official marker tells it, and I'll do my best to do it justice. Now, out here in Austin County, there's a piece of ground that's been holding its quiet for a long, long time. Travis-Pier Cemetery.
Established 1843. Think on that a moment. Eighteen forty-three.
The republic of Texas was still finding its footing, and somebody, somewhere in Austin County, set aside this ground and said, this is the place. That's where the record begins, and the cemetery has been keeping its own counsel ever since. In 2008, it was recognized as a Historic Texas Cemetery, which is really just the official world catching up to what the ground already knew.
Some places earn their standing simply by enduring. Travis-Pier Cemetery is one of them.
