Duane's take
Here's how the official marker tells it, and here's how Duane tells it back to you. Sit with this one a moment, because some stories are short and some stories are old, and this one is both. Vollmer Cemetery, out here in Harris County.
Established 1848. That is not a typo. Eighteen forty-eight.
Whatever was happening in your life this morning, someone was already laying their people to rest on this ground more than a hundred and seventy years before you came rolling down this road. We don't know the names the marker gives us. We don't know the full count of those who rest here.
What the marker gives us is a date, and a place, and the weight that comes with both. Established 1848. Designated a Historic Texas Cemetery in 2007.
That designation is its own kind of acknowledgment. Somebody looked at this ground, looked at that date, and said, yes, this matters, this deserves to be remembered. And now here you are, remembering it too.
Not every story needs a long telling. Sometimes the oldest ones just need you to slow down, look out toward the tree line, and tip your hat.
