Here's how the official marker tells it, and here's how I'm gonna pass it along to you. Somewhere in Pittsburg, in Camp County, there stands a building that has been quietly watching that town grow up around it for well over a hundred years. And buildings like that, they've got stories worth telling.

This one started out simple enough, a one-story commercial structure, built in the 1890s. No frills, no fuss. Just brick and purpose.

Now, a building like that could've come and gone without anybody much noticing. But then came W. L.

Garrett. In 1902, Garrett bought the property, and he had plans for it. Mercantile business, the kind of enterprise that puts a man's name on a corner and keeps it there.

For twenty-one years, that one-story building served him well enough. But 1923 rolls around, and Garrett decides the sky ought to be a little higher over his investment. He adds a second story.

Just like that, the building doubles its ambition. Now, Garrett's store wasn't the only thing going on inside those walls. Over the years, other retail businesses moved in, medical offices too.

That building became a kind of quiet hub, the sort of place a town leans on without always knowing it. And the design itself, well, it's honest. Simple, the marker says.

W. L. Garrett was born in 1867 and died in 1931, but the building he shaped is still standing in Pittsburg, still going by his name.
