Bexar County, Texas

Duane's take

Here's how the official marker tells it, and I'm gonna give it to you straight with a little room to breathe. Picture this: 1890, and somebody is putting up a proper two-story home in Bexar County. Good bones, solid construction, the kind of place built to last.

Nobody looking at it then could have guessed what it was about to become. But then, in 1894, a man named Wesley Peacock had an idea. Wesley Peacock, born in 1865, looked at that house and saw something more than a residence.

He founded the Peacock School for boys, and just like that, a home became a school. Now, a school is one thing. But Wesley Peacock had bigger ambitions rattling around in his head.

By 1900, military training had been initiated. You can almost hear the cadence calls bouncing off those old walls. The school was chartered in 1904, and from there it grew into something the marker calls a distinguished school with high academic standards.

That's not nothing. That is a reputation earned over years. Then 1926 rolls around, and Wesley Peacock's two sons, Wesley, Jr., and Donald, took charge of what had by then become the Peacock Military Academy.

The old man had built something worth handing down. But here's where the story gets a little dramatic. 1931. A fire broke out on the second floor of that very house, the original building, the one that started it all back in 1890.

Fire has a way of forcing decisions, and this one prompted major remodeling. The house survived, changed but standing. And the school kept going.

Kept educating. When it was all said and done, fifteen thousand students had passed through that 20-acre facility. Fifteen thousand.

In 1973, the place was deeded to the Salvation Army, to be known going forward as Peacock Center. One house, built in 1890, a school born in 1894, a fire in 1931, and fifteen thousand students later, the mission just changed hands. Wesley Peacock, who lived until 1941, started something on that lot that outlasted every expectation.

That's the kind of story a building carries when it's paid attention to.

What the marker says

Chartered in 1904, it became a distinguished school with High Academic standards. Peacock's two sons, Wesley, Jr., and Donald, took charge in 1926 of the Peacock Military Academy. A fire in 1931 on the second floor of the house prompted major remodeling. After educating 15,000 students, the 20-acre facility was deede in 1973 to the Salvation Army to be known as "Peacock Center."
