Kaufman County, Texas

Duane's take

Here's how the official marker tells it, and I'll do my best to do it justice. Way out in Kaufman County, there's a story that starts the way so many good Texas stories do: with somebody giving up a piece of land for the sake of the community. The Albert T.

Rice family donated that land, and in 1888, up went the first White Hall School. One room. That's it.

One room to hold all the ambition a frontier community could muster for its children. Now, it wasn't even called White Hall yet. Back then folks knew it as Caney Creek School, and it answered to that name for a good while.

Then 1910 rolled around, and the name changed to White Hall. The marker doesn't say why, and I won't pretend to know; but the name stuck, and the school kept growing. By 1928, that original one-room building had clearly said everything it had to say.

A new four-room building went up that year: four times the space, four times the possibility. And sure enough, within a year the faculty had grown to four as well. A school finding its stride.

It kept on that way until about 1949, when White Hall School was consolidated with the Mabank School District. Could've been the end of the story right there. But the building didn't just sit empty and collect dust; it went on to serve as a church and a community center for a time, still holding people together the way a good schoolhouse has a habit of doing.

And here's the part that lands quietest and stays longest: many former White Hall students and their descendants still live in that area today. The building may have changed its purpose, and the school may have folded into something bigger, but the roots that were put down out there in Kaufman County in 1888, well, they held.
