Williamson County, Texas

Duane's take

Here's how the official marker tells it, and here's how I'm gonna pass it along to you. Way out in Williamson County, there's a piece of ground with a long memory. It starts, as so many Texas stories do, with a land grant.

The original grant went to a man named George Washington Glasscock. What happened next is where the Wilson family enters the picture. In 1854, John S.

Wilson purchased that land. His brother, Robert W. Wilson, came along and acquired it in 1857.

And somewhere nearby, a spring was flowing, the kind of spring that draws people, that anchors a community. A settlement grew up around that spring, and folks came to call the whole place Wilson Spring. Now, here's where the story turns quiet.

In 1874, John S. Wilson became the first person buried on the family farm. The man who had purchased the land, who had helped root this community in place, became the first to rest in it permanently.

For years it remained a family affair, that patch of ground holding the people who had shaped the place. Then, in 1899, the land was formally deeded as a public cemetery, opening it to the Wilson family's neighbors alongside them. That's the thing about a cemetery out here.

It starts as a family's grief, and it grows into a whole community's story. The Wilson Spring Cemetery still serves that purpose today, keeping the names of those early settlers right where they planted themselves.

What the marker says

Located on land originally granted to George Washington Glasscock, the Wilson Spring Cemetery was established by the family of John S. Wilson, who purchased the land in 1854. His brother, Robert W. Wilson, acquired the land in 1857, and a community which built up in the area of a nearby spring became known as Wilson Spring. John S. Wilson was the first to be buried on the family farm in 1874. The land was formally deeded as a public cemetery in 1899 and serves as the burial place for the Wilson Family and their neighbors. (1988)
