Duane's take

Here's how the official marker tells it, and I'm just along for the ride. Way up in Spring, Texas, there's a building that's been standing on the same patch of ground since nineteen oh two. That's not a typo.

Same ground. Same building. Hasn't budged an inch.

Now that alone ought to earn some kind of award in a state that's torn down and rebuilt itself about six times over. But let's back up, because this story starts even earlier than that. The Wunsche family came to Spring from Germany in eighteen forty-six.

That means by the time they put up this building, they'd already been rooted in this community for more than a generation. These were not newcomers. These were people.

And in nineteen oh two, they built something to prove it. The Wunsche Bros. Saloon and Hotel, as it was known, went up to accommodate railroad workers.

Think about what that means, a saloon and a hotel right there at the crossroads of commerce and tired legs and long days on the line. A place to set something down, including yourself. Over time the building went by another name, the Spring Cafe, but the bones stayed the same, and so did the purpose.

It kept serving as a community gathering place, which is about as honest a job description as a building can have. The structure itself shows what they call typical turn-of-the-century commercial detailing, and it holds the distinction of being Spring's oldest existing commercial building still standing on its original site. The Wunsche family came from Germany, planted roots in eighteen forty-six, and their people built something in nineteen oh two that is still right there, right where they left it.

Some things just don't move.

What the marker says

This building was constructed in 1902 by one of Spring's earliest families, the Wunsches, who came here from Germany in 1846. Built to accommodate railroad workers, the Wunsche Bros. Saloon and Hotel, later known as the Spring Cafe, has served as a community gathering place throughout its history. The structure, which exhibits typical turn-of-the-century commercial detailing, is Spring's oldest existing commercial building on its original site. Recorded Texas Historic Landmark - 1984
