Duane's take

Here's how the official marker tells it, and I'll pass it along just the same. Way back in 1898, before Zion Lutheran Church had walls or a steeple or so much as a proper pew, a handful of families in Kerrville were already gathering in each other's homes to worship. Living rooms, kitchen tables, whatever space they had.

That went on for a few years, quiet and steady, until 1901, when seven charter families made it official and organized the congregation proper. Seven families. Not a crowd, but enough to build something that lasts.

Now, every new congregation needs someone to stand at the front and hold things together, and Zion's first pastor was a man whose name alone could fill a Sunday morning. The Reverend Karl Wilhelm Friedrich Hans Ernst Ermisch. You had to mean it when you called on him.

He served as pastor for the first two years, and on top of tending to Zion, he was also out riding to assist Lutheran parishes in neighboring communities. The man was spread across the Hill Country like butter on a big piece of bread. For a stretch, the congregation didn't have a building of their own, so they worshiped in Kerrville's Union Church, sharing the space and making do.

Then, in 1916, right here on this very site, they built their own sanctuary. Their own place. From borrowed rooms in 1898 to a house built for the purpose in 1916, that's a story of patience if I ever heard one.

And Zion Lutheran didn't stop there. Through programs of outreach and community assistance, the church worked its way into the fabric of Kerrville's life, and it's stayed there. The marker calls it a significant part of Kerrville's social and religious heritage, and after more than a century of showing up for people, it's hard to argue the point.

What the marker says
