Cameron County, Texas

Duane's take

Here's how the official marker tells it, and here's how I'm going to tell it to you. Down in Port Isabel, Cameron County, there stands a building that has been watching the Gulf Coast do its worst since nineteen thirty-one. That's the Alta Vista Apartments, and friend, it has seen some things.

Constructed that year for the Gaskill-Hodgson Company, it holds the distinction of being the oldest apartment building in Port Isabel. The oldest. In a town that sits right there on the water, where the storms come calling like they own the place.

That is not a small thing. That is a credential earned the hard way. The building is Mediterranean Style, two stories of stucco, and it carries itself accordingly.

Asymmetrical massing, so it doesn't look like every other box someone threw up near the shore. Arched-entry porches, covered balconies, and a red tile roof that just about glows in the coastal light. Nine apartments in total when it opened, three one-bedrooms, three two-bedrooms, and three efficiencies, a little community stacked up neat under that distinctive roofline.

Now here is the part worth sitting with for a moment. Numerous coastal storms. Numerous hurricanes.

The Gulf Coast doesn't offer any structure a quiet life, and the Alta Vista has faced that gauntlet decade after decade. The arches are still there. The balconies are still there.

That red tile roof is still there. Some buildings meet the coast and eventually the coast wins. This one is still standing, still the oldest, still exactly what it was built to be back in nineteen thirty-one for the Gaskill-Hodgson Company.

Port Isabel has seen a lot come and go. The Alta Vista, it seems, intends to stay.

What the marker says

Constructed in 1931 for the Gaskill-Hodgson Company, this Mediterranean Style structure is the oldest apartment building in Port Isabel. A survivor of numerous coastal storms and hurricanes, the complex originally consisted of three each one-bedroom, two-bedroom, and efficiency apartments. Prominent features of the two-story stucco building include its asymmetrical massing, arched-entry porches, covered balconies, and red tile roof. Recorded Texas Historic Landmark - 1988
