Duane's take
The official marker tells it this way, and I'm just the voice carrying it down the road. Now, out here in Jasper County, there's a piece of ground that's been holding quiet for a long, long time. The Boyett-McLemore Family Cemetery.
Established around 1860, give or take, back when the Civil War was still just a rumble on the horizon and this part of East Texas was a different world entirely. Somebody chose this ground. Somebody said, this is the place.
And families, the Boyetts, the McLemores, claimed it. They kept it. Generation after generation, that ground kept faith with the people who tended it.
And here's the thing about a cemetery that old, it doesn't ask for much. Just remembrance. Just the acknowledgment that the people resting there were real, that their lives mattered, that the ground they chose deserves to be called by their name.
In 2016, the state of Texas made it official, designating this site a Historic Texas Cemetery. That designation is a kind of promise, a way of saying, we see you, we remember you, and we're not letting you disappear into the pines. Some stories don't need many words.
They just need someone to stop, and say the names out loud.
