Duane's take

Here's how the official marker tells it, and I'm gonna do my best to do it justice. Now settle in, because this is the kind of life that makes you wonder if one man really had room enough to hold all of it. We're talking about Captain Henry Gray Carter, born in 1836 way up in Weston, Vermont.

About as far from Texas as a person can get without falling into the Atlantic Ocean. But Texas had a way of calling people, and in 1852, young Carter answered. He made the move, and whatever Vermont had planned for him, it would have to get along without him.

Then 1861 arrived, and with it the Civil War. Carter enlisted as a lieutenant in the Confederate Army, riding with General Tom Green's Brigade, Texas Cavalry. The following year, 1862, somebody noticed what he was made of.

He was promoted to Captain for gallantry. That word, gallantry, it carries weight. You don't earn it by staying comfortable.

Carter fought at Fort Butler, Mansfield, Bisland, and Pleasant Hill. That last one, Pleasant Hill, is where the war left its mark on him. He was wounded there.

In 1864, he married Cleopatra Williams. A name that commands a room all on its own. Then 1871 rolls around, and Carter moves to Marlin, Falls County, Texas, and he builds a house right here on this very site.

That same year he's becoming a prominent banker, a rancher, a business leader. The man did not slow down. He lived until 1896.

The house he built in 1871 was remodeled in 1926, long after he was gone. But here's the thing that'll stay with you. The original ax-hewn log foundation is still there.

The fireplaces, still there. The square nails, still visible. A man born in Vermont, tested in fire across Louisiana battlefields, arrived in Marlin and built something that outlasted him.

You can still see the marks of the tools that built it. That's not nothing. That's just about everything.
