Duane's take
Here's how the official marker tells it, and I'll do my best to do it justice. Now, out here in Goliad County, there is a place that has been keepin' quiet, patient watch over the land since 1853. Cristo Rey Cemetery.
That name alone carries a certain weight, doesn't it. Eighteen fifty-three. Think about what that means.
Texas had only been a state for a handful of years, and already, people were laying their loved ones to rest in this ground, marking it, claiming it, honoring it. That takes intention. That takes community.
And that ground has held those stories ever since, through every drought and flood and generation that Goliad County has seen come and go. In 2023, Cristo Rey Cemetery was recognized as a Historic Texas Cemetery. A formal acknowledgment of what the land already knew.
This place has been here. This place matters. Some things in Texas don't need to shout to make themselves heard.
Cristo Rey Cemetery has been doing its work in silence since 1853, and it will keep right on doing it.
