Here's my telling of what the official marker has to say about this place. Now, some stories fill pages. Some fill chapters.

And some, well, some say just enough to make you stop the car and think. Stockton Charco Cemetery, out here in Goliad County, is one of those. Established in 1863.

That's it. That's the whole of what the marker gives us. But sit with that a moment. 1863.

The country was tearing itself apart, and somebody, somewhere in this corner of Texas, was still doing the quiet, necessary, human work of setting aside ground for the dead. Choosing a place. Marking it.

Saying: this matters, these people matter, and we will remember them here. Stockton Charco Cemetery has been doing that work since 1863, and it's still here to tell you so.
