Duane's take
Here's how the official marker tells it, and I'll do my best to do it justice. Robert Christian Eckhardt arrived in Texas as a thirteen-year-old boy from Germany, stepping into a new world to join his uncle, a co-founder of Yorktown. That right there is a story in itself.
A boy, an ocean crossing, a whole new life waiting in DeWitt County. He found his footing. He became a merchant.
He and his wife Caroline Kleberg built something that goes well beyond any single building or any single acre of land. Together, Robert and Caroline raised eleven sons and daughters. Eleven.
And from that family would come a United States Congressman, authors, doctors, lawyers, teachers, and other leaders. Not bad for a boy who showed up at thirteen with nothing but grit and an uncle's address. In 1879, Robert Christian Eckhardt built the ranch house that still stands today.
He would commute from that house to his store, back and forth, season after season, the way a man does when he's built something worth returning to. Robert was born in 1836 and died in 1887. Caroline Kleberg Eckhardt, born in 1840, lived on until 1913, long enough to watch that family tree spread wide.
Now here is the part that'll stay with you. That ranch house has never left the family. Not once.
And since 1947, it has been owned by a grandson, Dr. Kleberg Eckhardt. A boy crosses an ocean.
He plants himself in Texas soil. And generations later, his grandson is still there, keeping the light on. That's the Eckhardt Ranch House.
What the marker says
Robert Christian Eckhardt (1836-87) came from Germany at 13 to join an uncle, Yorktown's co-founder. A merchant and father of 11 sons and daughters, he built this house in 1879, afterward commuting to his store. Eckhardt and his wife Caroline Kleberg (1840-1913) became the ancestors of a U.S. Congressman, authors, doctors, lawyers, teachers, and other leaders. The ranch home has been continuously owned by family members -- since 1947 by a grandson, Dr. Kleberg Eckhardt. Recorded Texas Historic Landmark - 1975
