Comal County, Texas

Duane's take

The way I tell it, I'm drawing straight from the official marker for this one. Now settle in, because this little house has seen more history than its modest walls might suggest. We're talking about the Erhardt Neuse House, sitting right there in the town of Gruene, Comal County, Texas.

And the story starts, as so many stories in this part of the world do, with cotton. A whole lot of cotton. Built in the 1880s by a man named Henry D.

Gruene, this wasn't just any house. It was the home of Erhardt Neuse, the field foreman of H. D.

Gruene's vast cotton interests. Now, when a marker calls something vast, you pay attention. That's not a word they throw around lightly.

Henry D. Gruene had cotton interests big enough to need a man like Erhardt Neuse keeping things running in the fields, and he built this house to keep that man close. The Neuse family moved in, and they stayed.

They kept right on livin' there, generation after generation, all the way until the 1930s, when the town of Gruene experienced a decline. Just like that, a whole era wound down. But the house itself, well, it held on.

And if you look at it, really look at it, you can read the craftsmanship of the late nineteenth century right there in the walls. Board-and-batten siding. An extended side bay with angled corners.

An inset front porch fitted out with milled brackets. Somebody built this thing with care, with intention. A vernacular cottage, the marker calls it, and there's something honest about that word.

Vernacular. It means it speaks the language of its place and its time. The Erhardt Neuse House still does.
