Cameron County, Texas

Duane's take

Here's how the official marker tells it, and I'll do my best to do it justice. Now, out here in Cameron County, there are places where the land itself holds memory, and this is one of them. The Esparza Cemetery.

The name goes back to Carlos Villarreal Esparza, born in 1828, gone by 1885, and the family's roots in the surrounding ranch land stretch all the way back to the early nineteenth century. That is deep Texas ground, friend. Deep Texas ground.

According to family records, the original cemetery was established south of this very site, sometime in the mid-1800s, and for a while that was where the Esparzas laid their people to rest. But the land had other ideas. Flooding came, and problems followed, the kind you cannot argue with.

So in 1888, Carlos' widow, Francisca Garcia Esparza, made a decision that took real resolve. She moved his grave, and the graves of other family members, here. Think about that for a moment.

A widow, tending not just to the living but to the resting, making sure the dead were not left to the mercy of floodwater. It is believed that Carlos' own parents, Pedro and Felicidad Villarreal Esparza, are interred here as well, though the records speak of that with a quiet, careful uncertainty. What is certain is who followed them into this ground.

Family members who served in World Wars I and II. Local civic and political leaders. Officers in law enforcement.

Officers in the Texas Rangers. Generation after generation, laid to rest in soil their ancestors claimed when this part of Texas was still finding its shape. The marker calls this cemetery a record of the area's Mexican American pioneers, and it still serves the community today.

Some places are just geography. This one is a story that keeps going.

What the marker says

This graveyard was named for Carlos Villarreal Esparza (1828-1885), whose family's occupation of the surrounding ranch land began in the early 19th century. According to family records, the original Esparza Cemetery was established south of this site in the mid-1800s. In 1888, Carlos' widow Francisca Garcia Esparza moved his grave and those of other family members because of flooding and other problems at the old cemetery. It is believed that Carlos' parents, Pedro and Felicidad Villarreal Esparza, are interred here. The cemetery is the resting place of family members who served in World Wars I and II, local civic and political leaders, officers in law enforcement and the Texas Rangers. A record of the area's Mexican American pioneers, it continues to serve the community. (1999)
