Duane's take

The official marker tells this one, and I'm just the voice carryin' it down the road. Now, most churches can point to one founding, one congregation, one spot on the map where it all began. The First Presbyterian Church of Itasca?

It took six churches, five different communities, and the better part of a century just to get everyone in the same room. Let that settle a moment. Six congregations.

Five communities, counting Itasca, Osceola, Eureka, Grandview, and Files Valley. All of them carrying their own histories, their own Sunday mornings, their own sense of who they were. And somehow, over the years, they found their way to each other.

It started coming together in 1912, when the First Cumberland Presbyterian and the First Presbyterian, that's the U.S. church, both right there in Itasca, decided to merge. Two churches, one community, one fellowship. That was the seed of it.

Then, one by one, the other congregations joined in over the years. The last to come was the Files Valley Presbyterian Church, which merged with the fellowship in 1958. And that merger brought something else with it.

Since 1958, this congregation has been associated with the Presbyterian Children's Home, a statewide orphanage that had been going since 1906. So woven into this story of six churches finding their way together is the story of children finding a home. Six congregations across five communities, more than a hundred years of Sunday mornings, and one fellowship still standing.

The marker was placed in 1986, the year Texas marked a hundred and fifty years of statehood. Felt like the right time to finally put it all down.
