Duane's take
Here's my telling of what the official marker has to say about Frank Mulder Gossett, straight out of Houston County, Texas. Now, some folks leave their mark on one thing. Frank Mulder Gossett left his mark on the whole shape of Texas memory itself.
Born August 25th, 1892, right there in Houston County, Frank came from stock that had already staked a claim to the land — literally. His grandfather, Andrew E. Gossett, Senior, was the donor of the Crockett townsite.
So you might say Frank grew up knowing that places don't just happen. People make them. And Frank Gossett spent his life making sure people remembered that.
He was a prominent local historian, which in Texas means something particular. It means you're the keeper of the fire. You're the one who knows which stories are true and which ones just got tall over time.
Frank Gossett knew the difference, and he cared about it. In 1922, he helped found the Sons of the Republic of Texas. That's not a casual undertaking — that's a man deciding the Republic deserves its own guardians.
The organization later recognized Frank for exactly that devotion, honoring him as a Knight of San Jacinto. That title doesn't get handed out lightly. And San Jacinto was never far from Frank Gossett's work.
He was also a founder and officer of the San Jacinto Memorial Association — the group that raised the funds for the monument and museum at the San Jacinto battlefield. That monument standing out there today, that museum holding all those artifacts of the Republic — Frank Gossett helped put the money together to make that happen. He passed on September 22nd, 1974, but here's the thing about a man who spends his life building monuments to memory: he's not exactly easy to forget.
Houston County native. Grandson of the man who gave Crockett its townsite. Founder of organizations that shaped how Texas sees itself.
Frank Mulder Gossett didn't just live Texas history — he made sure it had somewhere to stand.
