Duane's take

Here's my telling of what the official marker at Gruene's Hall has to say, and friends, this one's worth slowing down for. Way back in 1878, somebody put up a building in the community of Gruene that was meant to do two things at once: keep the thirst at bay and keep the dancing going. That building was a saloon and social hall, built for the area's cotton farmers, and the man who swung the hammer was Christian Herry, born in 1854, gone in 1917.

But Herry wasn't working on his own inspiration. He built that hall under the direction of a town developer by the name of Henry D. Gruene, the very man many of those farmers worked for.

Now think about that for a moment. The man who shaped the town also shaped the place where the town came to let loose. That is a particular kind of power.

The hall itself is a big, one-story structure, and it's got what they call a false front entry, with windows and doors arranged in a way that doesn't match up symmetrically, one side not quite mirroring the other, which gives it a character you can spot from the road. The marker says this is believed to be one of the oldest dance halls in Texas. One of the oldest.

For over a century it sat at the center of this community's social life, which means generation after generation of cotton farmers walked through that lopsided door to dance, to drink, to talk, and to forget the week. Some buildings just outlast the explanations for why they matter. Gruene's Hall is one of them.
