Hill County, Texas

Duane's take

Here's my telling of what the official marker has to say about the J. W. Park Home in Hill County.

Now settle in, because even a house can have a story worth telling. John Wilkes Park was born in 1869, and so was his wife, Willie Clinkscales Park, same year, as if the world knew they'd end up together. They built this home around 1908, and they did not build small.

We're talking classical revival style, the kind of architecture that says something about a person before they even open the front door. Massive Corinthian columns out front, milled details worked into the wood and trim, the whole place carrying that turn-of-the-century love affair with classicism, that notion that a well-ordered house reflected a well-ordered life. John Park had come up from Mississippi, making his way to Itasca, Texas, where he eventually served as mayor from 1916 to 1920.

Four years of civic duty in a town that needed leading, and he did it from the shadow of those big columns he'd put up years before. Then John died in 1921. Willie Park, born in 1869, outlived her husband by years, and she kept the place going the way resourceful people do.

She rented out parts of the house. The home stayed in the Park family all the way until 1945. Two people, one house, a town they helped shape, and columns still standing.

Some things are built to last.

What the marker says

John Wilkes Park (1869-1921) and his wife, Willie Clinkscales Park (1869-1935), built this classical revival style home about 1908. Its massive Corinthian columns and other milled details reflect a popular turn-of-the century embrace of classicism. A Mississippi native, Park served as mayor of Itasca from 1916 to 1920. After John's death, Willie Park rented parts of the house. The home remained in the Park family until 1945. Recorded Texas Historic Landmark - 1986
