Bosque County, Texas

Duane's take

Here's how the official marker tells it, and I'll give it to you straight with a little room to breathe. Way out in Bosque County, there's a log cabin that's been through more than most buildings ever dream of. It belongs to the story of Joseph Olson and his family, and that story starts an ocean away.

In 1858, the Olson family left Norway and immigrated to the United States. They didn't arrive to a place they built themselves, not right away. They settled in with other Norwegian immigrants in the Norse community, living in neighbors' homes while they found their footing in this new land.

Now picture that, crossing an ocean, landing in Texas, and starting from scratch in a tight-knit community of folks who understood exactly what you'd left behind. Joseph Olson, born in 1811, was a man who knew what permanence looked like. And in 1866, he built it.

A log cabin, right there on part of his original seven-acre farm. That cabin became the family's primary residence, the center of their world, for six years. Then in 1872, a larger stone house was constructed, and the cabin stepped aside from its starring role.

But here's the thing about a well-built cabin. It doesn't just disappear. It stayed right there on the Olson farm, in the possession of the Olson family, all the way into the 1970s.

That is a long time for a log cabin to hold its ground. Then came one more journey. It was moved to this site and reconstructed in 1985, standing now as a reminder of the Norwegian heritage in the area.

Joseph Olson lived from 1811 to 1894. His cabin outlasted him, survived generations, crossed county ground, and got put back together piece by piece. Some things just refuse to be forgotten.

What the marker says

After the Joseph Olson family immigrated to the United States from Norway in 1858, they lived first in the homes of Norwegian immigrants in the Norse community. In 1866, Olson (1811-1894) built a log cabin for his family on part of his original seven-acre farm. The cabin served as the family's primary residence until 1872, when a larger stone house was constructed. The log cabin remained on the Olson farm and in the possession of the Olson family until the 1970s. It was moved to this site and reconstructed in 1985 as a reminder of the Norwegian heritage in the area. Texas Sesquicentennial 1836-1986
