Duane's take
The way I tell it comes straight from the official marker, so let me set the record right on a man Wharton County doesn't let you forget. George E. Quinan was a native of Dublin, Ireland, and he came to Texas in the 1830s.
Now that alone ought to tell you something about the man. Cross an ocean, land in a brand new republic, and keep moving. By the mid-1840s he had made his way to Wharton, set up a law office near this very site, and started building a life that would stretch across some of the most turbulent decades Texas ever saw.
In 1845, the people of the district elected him district attorney. That's trust, right out of the gate. He and his wife Mary Anne put down roots too, establishing a home on Peach Creek in Wharton County.
Not just a career. A life. Then came the Texas Senate, two full terms, running from 1857 to 1861.
The man was in that chamber as the whole country was cracking apart at the seams. When the Civil War came, Quinan served in the Confederate army. And when the war was done, he didn't disappear into the quiet.
He came back to the law, serving as a member of the Commission of Civil Appeals. And here is the line that really lands, if you let it. In 1879, George E.
Quinan was among the founders of the State Bar Association. A man from Dublin, Ireland, who came to Texas in the 1830s, helped lay the very foundation of how this state organizes its lawyers to this day. He is buried near Peach Creek, the same creek where he and Mary Anne made their home, all those decades before.
Some roots, it turns out, go all the way down.
