Duane's take

Here's how the official marker tells it, and I'm just the one passin' it along. Now, if you want a story about the long game, pull up a chair. A young man named Adrian Ortiz was born in Spain in 1860.

Before he ever turned eighteen, he had already crossed an ocean and landed in Brownsville, Texas. He moved in with relatives, learned the merchant trade from the ground up, and then he got to work. In 1892, Ortiz built himself a structure.

Not a modest little storefront you'd forget by sundown. No, this building had corbeled brickwork, parapets with pinnacles, paneled doors with transoms. The kind of details that say: I am here, and I intend to stay.

He called his operation La Madrilena, meaning native of Madrid, and that business became an important part of the community for over sixty years. Now here is where the story earns its place around the fire. Adrian Ortiz was born in 1860.

He lived until 1957. You don't have to do the arithmetic. Just let those two numbers sit there side by side and feel the weight of them.

The man who built La Madrilena in 1892 lived to see the twentieth century well underway, his building still standing, his name still on it. Some structures outlast their builders. Some builders outlast just about everything else.

Adrian Ortiz, it seems, managed to do both.

What the marker says

A native of Spain, Adrian Ortiz (1860-1957) emigrated to Brownsville before he was 18 and lived with relatives who trained him as a merchant. He built this structure in 1892 to house his mercantile operation, La Madrilena (native of Madrid), an important community business for over 60 years. The vernacular store building features corbeled brickwork, parapets with pinnacles, and paneled doors with transoms.
