Duane's take

The way I tell it, I'm going by what the official marker says right here at Lower South Grape Creek School in Gillespie County. So let's take it from the beginning. Somewhere out here in the Hill Country, back in 1871, area settlers put up a log schoolhouse.

Not here, mind you, but a mile and a half south of here, down along South Grape Creek. Now that's not a grand beginning, but it was a real one. Logs, creek water nearby, and children who needed learnin'.

For years, that little school was part of Luckenbach School Precinct No. 3. Then came 1889, and things shifted. The school got a new name, Lower South Grape Creek, and started serving as District No. 21.

A new name, a new designation, same stretch of Hill Country limestone and cedar. Then 1901 rolled around, and somebody decided the log schoolhouse had done its duty long enough. They replaced it with this structure.

The one standing right in front of you. Stuccoed limestone, open plan inside, and up top a bell tower with a pyramidal roof. It is, as the marker puts it, typical of early 1900s rural school buildings found in Texas' Hill Country.

Which is another way of saying it belongs here. It fits this land like it grew out of it. For decades, that bell tower watched over students coming and going, seasons turning, the Hill Country doing what it does.

And then, 1960. The school closed and merged with the Fredericksburg School District. Just like that, the building went quiet.

But here it still stands. Stucco and limestone and that pyramidal roof, holdin' on to 1901 like it's in no particular hurry to let go.
